May 20, 2008: Traffic Crash Results in 1 Fatality

On 5/18/08, at approximately 2:31 a.m., Winthrop Harbor Police were dispatched to a traffic crash involving a motor vehicle vs. light pole that occurred at the intersection of Lewis Avenue and 9th Street. When police arrived at the scene they located an individual still trapped in the vehicle. The individual was identified as Ernest M. Card, 41, of Kenosha. Ernest M. Card was unresponsive and had died as a result of the crash.

Winthrop Harbor Police accident investigators, with the assistance of the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT), conducted the at-scene crash investigation. During the investigation police learned Card was traveling Northbound on Lewis Avenue approaching the intersection of 9th Street. For reasons unknown, Card crossed onto the Southbound shoulder of the road and continued Northbound on Lewis Avenue almost in a straight line. As Card's vehicle crossed the intersection of 9th Street, it struck the Northwest traffic light pole causing the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise. During the rotation the vehicle had a secondary impact with a tree. The vehicle rolled over and came to a final resting position with the driver's side on the ground and the passenger side was in an upright position. Investigators believe that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the traffic crash.
