July 30, 2008: Driver Charged in Fatal Car vs. Bicycle Accident

Nancy A. Harding, 56, of Winthrop Harbor, was arrested today by the Winthrop Harbor Police Department for an accident that resulted in the death of, William S. Vidakovic, 51, of Winthrop Harbor. Vidakovic was riding his bicycle Northbound on Sheridan Road on May 8, 2008 at approximately 8:41 PM, when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle, allegedly driven by Harding. Vidakovic was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Harding failed to provide information about the accident to Police during the course of their investigation into Vidakovic's death.

Lake County's Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to assist the Winthrop Harbor Police Department with the investigation. Winthrop Harbor Accident Investigator (AI), Officer Chris Willets, used witness statements, video footage obtained from local businesses, and the FBI Chicago Forensic Laboratory to assemble the case against Harding. Photos processed by Lake County Sheriff's Department photo lab were used to provide evidence and develop a time line. Through cooperation by assisting agencies, under the guidance of Lake County Assistant States Attorneys Eric Kalata and Jason Grindel, Officer Willets obtained multiple arrest warrants for Harding.

Harding is charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, overtaking a vehicle on the left, failure to exercise due care, and two counts of failure to provide information following an accident involving personal death. Harding posted bond for the warrants and was given a court date of 9/11/08, at 9:00 AM in court room 403 at the Lake County court house, 18 N. County in Waukegan.
