April 6, 2009: Solicitation for Murder Investigation

Winthrop Harbor Police Investigation leads to Federal ATF Arrest

Purchase of Firearm/Solicitation for Murder Investigation

In early April 2009, the Winthrop Harbor Police Department received anonymous information alleging that a local subject was seeking to purchase an untraceable firearm for use in the murder of his wife, one of her relatives, and a third, unrelated person. A report was taken, and the case turned over to the Detective Bureau of the Winthrop Harbor Police Department. The Wheeling Police Department, in whose jurisdiction the suspect's wife resides, was contacted to insure her safety during the course of the investigation. After further investigation, Winthrop Harbor Detectives learned that the suspect worked and lived in the Village of Winthrop Harbor.

The Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agency was contacted and agreed to assist the Winthrop Harbor Police Department during the course of the investigation due to the anonymous information received. On April 10, 2009, ATF Agents, with the assistance of the Winthrop Harbor Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) personnel, took Charanjit K. Sharma, 44, of Winthrop Harbor into custody without further incident. Sharma was charged federally with Possession of a Firearm with Manufacture Serial Number Removed and with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in Violation of a Court Order. Sharma was transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Chicago pending a court date.
